Day 1 (LD): WAGGA WAGGA TO MUDGEE – Wednesday, 13th August 2025
Meeting our group, we set off to uncover the delights of Mudgee and surrounds. Our morning stop is in Greenethorpe at Iandra Castle. This impressive property was established by George Henry Greene from 1878-1911. Greene pioneered share farming in NSW in 1892, and soon after the turn of the century, Iandra produced the largest yield of wheat for that time – 100,000 bags. All the grandeur of yesteryear remains at Iandra, with the faithful restoration of the homestead by David Morris through the 1970’s. Following our tour, we head to Cowra for lunch and a look through the Japanese Gardens. Leaving Cowra, we head via Bathurst on our way to Mudgee, where on arrival we check into our motel settle into our rooms, before dinner in the hotel bistro.

Day 2 (BLD): EXPLORING MUDGEE & HILL END – Thursday, 14th August 2025
Mudgee is the oldest town west of the Blue Mountains and was ‘discovered’ by Lawson and Blaxland in 1821. It was settled soon after by pasture hungry squatters and their flocks of sheep and cattle. It is said that Mudgee means ‘nest in the hills’. The town was proclaimed in 1838. Architect Robert Hoddle later designed the street plan, which proved to be so successful that Melbourne was designed from the same basic grid. He designed Mudgee’s wide streets to be broad enough to turn a team of oxen. Many of the fine old stately buildings from the last century thankfully remain and most are now classified by the National Trust, to preserve the town’s heritage. We start our day by taking a driving tour of this beautiful little town before having a bit of time to wander the main street. Next, we stop at Mudgee Honey Haven for morning tea, and to experience some local honey and mead – you may also like to purchase one of your favourites. Late morning, we head south to the old gold mining village of Hill End. Tremendous wealth of gold was exposed in the area in the mid to late 19th century when the world’s largest specimen of reef gold was discovered. The “Holtermann Nugget”, as it was called, weighed 286kg. Most of the surviving buildings in the town date from 1872 and many – including the district hospital (now a visitor centre and museum), the Royal Hotel and some of the shops – have been restored in recent years. We meet a local guide who will show us around including a visit to the museum, the blacksmith’s shop and stables, the time tunnel and a visit to the underground mine. Our lunch will be enjoyed whilst taking in the history of the area. We return to Mudgee this afternoon and stop at the High Valley Cheese tasting stand before returning to the hotel in time for dinner.
