Day 1: (LD): WAGGA WAGGA TO MELBOURNE: Tuesday 19 March 2024
From Wagga Wagga we head off for an incredible tour including the Melbourne Flower Show and Kabloom Festival. Our first stop along the way is Shepparton for our lunch at the Peppermill Inn. Next, not far from lunch is the Emerald Bank Complex that is home to the Riverside Gardens Nursery and the Chocolate Apple factory for us to look through. This afternoon we arrive at our Melbourne hotel, that’s located about 20 minutes outside the city at Caroline Springs.
(Lunch at Peppermill Inn, Dinner in Hotel)
Mercure Caroline Springs – 3-night stay
Day 2: (BD): PUFFING BILLY & THE DANDENONGS: Wednesday 20 March 2024
We head for the hills this morning, as we drive into the Dandenong Ranges. A fun thing to do for all ages is ride on Puffing Billy from Belgrave to Lakeside. Belgrave has always been a railway town since a narrow-gauge line was opened in 1900 to help the local farmers bring their goods to the markets in Melbourne. In 1962 the railway was restored and the now famous Puffing Billy provides a great introduction to the area. At Lakeside Station the new visitor centre has a museum and café for us to look through and purchase lunch. We now head to the Tesselaar Tulip Farm for the incredible Kabloom Festival. Here, we are treated to spectacular fields and colourful blooms. Breathtaking views and photo opportunities abound in the fields with exceptional colours. We spend the afternoon here and return to our hotel late afternoon.
(Breakfast and Dinner in Hotel, lunch at own expense)
Day 3 (BD): MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER SHOW: Thursday 21 March 2024
Today, after breakfast we head into Melbourne and take a sightseeing drive around the city before arriving at the Queen Victoria Markets. At this vast and vibrant centre of trade, we’ll spend time discovering the delightful souvenirs, entertaining buskers and marveling at the fresh produce of the celebrated market. This afternoon we are heading to the 2024 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. This is a hallmark event for Victoria and is the most prestigious of its kind in Australia with over 300 exhibitions. To conclude our day, we head to the Melbourne Docklands and join the Melbourne Tramboat for a sunset Fish and Chips cruise along the Yarra River. See the interesting Port of Melbourne from a different perspective and as the city lights turn on and the sun sets, we can relax and admire the sights.
(Breakfast in hotel, lunch own expense, Fish & Chips sunset dinner cruise)
Day 4 (B): HEADING HOME: Friday 22 March 2024
Today we will be heading home and taking a look at several of the colourful murals painted on the Art Silos and water towers located in the smaller towns off the highway. Our first stop is in Violet Town at the Southern Aurora Memorial Gardens that has a mural dedicated to the Southern Aurora train crash of 1969. At Benalla we divert off the highway and head to Goorambat, followed by Devenish, St James and Tungamah. Finally, we arrive back in Wagga following our short break in Melbourne for the Flower Show.
